| Cost can vary greatly depending on the system size, panel type, racking system, permit costs, etc. As an example, a typical 7 – 7.5 kw system for an 1800 sq. ft. residence can cost anywhere from $30,000 - $45,000 before tax credits and utility incentives, more if you add storage devices like batteries. Each system is individually designed for your specific needs and based on an average kilowatt usage gathered from one to two years electric bills. Approximately 70% of the system costs are paid for depending on the tax credits and incentives. Grid-tie systems are cost effective when viewed in the long run. Although the current return on this investment is projected to be between 10 and 12 years, there are several factors to consider. The cost of electricity is projected to increase at least 3% per year in the future which, results in a quicker return for your investment. Also the value of your property increases but your property taxes do not! And don't forget; installing a solar system in your house will increase both the value of your home and its marketability. Our “winter visitors” can profit from a P.V. System as well. The system builds credits with the Utility Company while you are away during the summer months and are applied toward your usage and ultimately your bill when you return. A winning situation for the homeowner! Does a P.V. System work on a cloudy day? Yes, since the electricity generated depends on light intensity and not irradiation or direct sunlight, it will work in cloudy conditions. However, the greater intensity of light the greater the flow of electricity and subsequent savings. TYPICAL COSTS, INCENTIVES AND PAYBACK PERIOD FOR A 5.16 KW P.V. SYSTEM
